Directed by William Wyler. 118 mins.

From Theodore Dreiser’s novel comes this MUST SEE film easily being one of the finest of the era! Some of Hollywood’s greatest craftsmen at the helm have a produced a work of maturity without allowing it to descend into the easily reached romantic sentimentality. Laurence Olivier arguably gives us the best performance of his film career (it baffles one how this performance was overlooked at Oscar time) along with Jennifer Jones, once again showing why she is one of the greats of old Hollywood! It’s a very mature film about becoming middle aged and still yearning for romance and it’s an uncompromising look at this….It goes against the classic mould of Hollywood studio romanticism with it’s ending of realism, but is compelling viewing. Not to be missed! Have Kleenex at hand!!

A selection of shorts will be screened prior to intermission.
