The Good Fortune Trust
The Good Fortune Trust is an Australian initiative that supports Tibetan Buddhist monks
and nuns, both those in Tibet and those in exile in India. It was founded by globally
revered teacher, the Venerable Geshe Tashi Tsering to care for his home monastery
in the Kardze area of Tibet, as well as for hundreds of monks from this region who are
studying in India. His many Tibetan students look to him for guidance and practical
support. He shoulders this responsibility with characteristic compassion and kindness.
The Good Fortune Trust is rebuilding Khangmar Monastery, a small and very poor
monastery in eastern Tibet. The conditions at Khangmar Monastery and the nearby Jhilu
Ritrek Nunnery are very primitive. Thanks to the kindness of Westerners, the Trust is able
to provide basic food and medicine and essential utilities like running water. The Good
Fortune Trust is also funding literacy programmes that will underpin the establishment of
advanced formal study at the monastery.

Brisbane’s Burlesque Revival

An Evening With...

Those in the know will be flocking to Brisbane’s Old Museum on Friday the 13th of November to witness the revival of the River City’s vaudeville heyday.

New local entertainment company Whistle Productions is bringing the city’s old sequinned and laced-up spirit to life, through a series of shows that transport the viewer back to the age of showmanship, glamour and tease. Best of all, the showcase is exclusively Brisbane talent – Whistle is bent on showing the city what culture and charm we already possess without importing from other cities.

On Friday the 13th, the heritage-listed Old Museum will host the first of these showcases. “An Evening With…” begins at 7pm with drinks, music and casual entertainment. Doors open at 8pm, as the audience take their seats in the lavish Concert Hall. Then Brisbane’s finest will keep them spellbound – iconic burlesque performer Lola the Vamp, rising stars The Judy Dolls, boylesque sensation Mark Winmill, virtuosos The Empire Salon and Dance Orchestra, singer Matthew McDowell, underground burlesque prodigy Rose, and more, all join in for An Evening of tease, circus, dance, wit, and music.

“An Evening With…” starts at 7pm at the Old Museum, Brisbane on Friday the 13th of November. Tickets $32 from http://www.moshtix.com or $45 at the door.

THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘MASOCHIST’ IN OCTOBER 2009
DEBUT ALBUM ‘TANGALOOMA’ TO FOLLOW EARLY 2010

The collision of art-rock, classic pop and indie has never sounded as lush as it does on ‘Masochist’, the first single lifted from Brisbane six piece band The John Steel Singers’ forthcoming debut album.
Recorded under the guidance of producer, mentor and fellow Queenslander Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens, new single ‘Masochist’ sees The John Steel Singers blend rich vocal harmonies and horns to create a woozy, psychedelic soundtrack for the lyrics of writer Scott Bromiley. ‘Masochist’ has The John Steel Singers apply what is becoming their trademarked psychedelic, observation of disfunctional relationships; the story here of a man who can’t apply himself to love. The band keep things upbeat though, moving between Beatles’eque horn arrangements and orchestral pomp. It’s a fluid, appealing sound.
Following the high-rotation Triple J radio success of previous singles ‘Rainbow Kraut’, ‘Evolution’ and ‘Strawberry Wine’ the John Steel Singers took the opportunity to record their debut album with Robert Forster in Melbourne’s Sing Sing Studios. Forster has drawn a live, energetic performance out of the group, allowing them freedom to wander and experiment. The album will be tied together by Brooklyn-based producer Nicholas Vernhes, renowned for working with US indie giants Animal Collective and Dearhunter. He is due to complete mixing the album at his Rare Book Room Studio in Brooklyn by the middle of October.New single ‘Masochist’ showcases The John Steel Singers’ bent sense of color and versatility in composition, their effortless pastiche of classic pop and warped indie. The John Steel Singers hit the road in October to celebrate the launch of ‘Masochist’. Joining the band will be the irresistible folk hues of Little Scout, whose are launching across the tour their second EP named “ Different in the Distance”.
‘Masochist’ singles launch dates are presented by Brag, Beat, Rave, FBI and 4ZZZ.

Here’s his colourful tribute to this city’s 150th Birthday.

He knows his town and he tickles its fancies with larrikin wordplay and saucy lyrics.

He pings off at Brisbane’s life, lifestyles, plusses, minuses, leaders, cowboys and

He’s not out to change the world he wallows in, he just wants to point out that all things considered, Brisbane is a bit of a three-ring circus. Send in the clownsbrisbane_unplugged
