The Queensland Youth Orchestra

Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) is the State’s major orchestral training and performance organisation for young musicians aged 10 to 23. Under the artistic leadership of John Curro AM MBE since 1966, QYO is renowned as a world-class youth orchestra organisation. QYO is a member of Youth Orchestras Australia (YOA), a network comprising the major state youth orchestras of Australia and the Australian Youth Orchestra.

QYO currently has eight ensembles: three symphony orchestras, two concert bands, a junior string orchestra, a chamber orchestra and a big band. Each group has its own program of activities including rehearsals, tutorials, concerts, camps and tours.

Each October, around 640 musicians audition for QYO before a panel of professional musicians and over 500 musicians are offered positions in orchestras. Performing members of QYO must re-audition for a place each year alongside new applicants.

Queensland Youth Choir

Established in 1984, QYC provides children and young adults – from Prep. to age 25 – with unique, high quality choral training and performance opportunities. The program of weekly rehearsals and an annual camp incorporates aspects of singing, choreography and stagecraft. The various ensembles that constitute the Queensland Youth Choir perform a wide variety of repertoire including contemporary, classical, popular, folk, rock, gospel, jazz, art music, musical theatre and Australiana. Most performances incorporate a number of pieces which are specially choreographed to add an additional visual dimension to the overall effect.

QYC also runs early childhood music classes – Bambino Music – for young children up to five years of age.

Members take pride in belonging to an organisation that is highly respected both nationally and internationally, and that performs in its own concert series, on tours, and at special events including weddings, sporting fixtures, conventions and community events.

QYC is a non-profit, community-based organisation which manages four choral ensembles – Poco VociStellaVoce (previously the Queensland Children’s Choir), Vivace Voices and VoiceWorks.

QYC has its office and rehearsal space at the Old Museum Building in the inner Brisbane suburb of Bowen Hills.

Queensland Rhythmic Gymnastics Australia

The academy offers quality coaching by fully qualified coaches of State, National and International teams to children and young adults. Our elite and high level gymnasts train continuously throughout the year, and our sessions are scheduled 6 days a week, from Sunday to Friday.

Our academy has a specialist focus on preparing athletes for the international stream of our sport. We are proud of producing athletes for international events such as the 2004 Olympic Games, 2006 Commonwealth Games, Pacific Alliance Championships, Australian Youth Olympic Festivals, World Cup competitions and international group competitions. Our programs have produced many National Champions across all age categories, both in the individual competitions, and in the multiples and groups divisions.

We also actively engage in performing for the wider community, from corporate events to school fetes, government festivals to various sporting events. Our displays are always received very positively by the wider public and we enjoy the opportunity to take our spectacular sport outside of the training environment. Highlights include performing in front of Her Majesty, The Queen, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2002, and various Queensland Sportswomen of the Year awards.

QRGA has a focus on Fitness, Fun, and Friendships and prides itself on providing an “extended family” environment. Many of our Senior athletes have been a part of our club for 10 years, and we expect that many junior athletes will also continue in the sport for most of their development into young adults. This allows our coaches to develop a special bond with our gymnasts that is rare amongst other extra-curricular activities, and both the parents of our gymnasts and the gymnasts themselves are appreciative of the away rhythmic gymnastics and our academy have enriched their lives.
